Grandpa/Grandma E and Grandma (Grinka) and Grandpa B

I was cooking pancakes this morning and I started thinking about these 4 amazing people. 3 were in my life, 1 was in my life by stories I heard! Sadly Grandpa B passed when my mother was 16- he was buried the day JFK was killed :( but the stories I heard from her, I could imagine the person he was! He liked Martinis after a hard day of being a country dr, loved his garden, like grilling out, woodworking and refinishing furniture, was in 2 wars (WWI and the Korean war), had a purple heart, and a heart a big as the world!

The other 3 I had more "intimate" knowledge of, and those are the 3 I am focusing on today. The saying is "be careful what you do, kids are watching" and that is so true. Without saying anything, they were such HUGE models in my life. Such HUGE influences. Not to say my parents weren't- I will talk about them another time- but my grandparents are on my heart this morning and I want to talk about them.

My grandmothers were amazing women. They lived through the depression, raised families, survived. My grandfather, he was a character, the comic relief! He was so much fun! I can still hear my grandma yell "EMERSON!!!!" when he would have all the grandkids gathered around him telling his "ditties" or stories! LOL And not all of them were "g" rated! LOL He loved his garden. Just like my other grandfather. I can remember at his last house he had 2 rows of Peoneys, like a maze in the back yard. They were so beautiful and amazing! He would mow with a push mower, NEVER owned a gas mower, EVER. Last year I started really gardening in earnest at our house, and made sure to plant at least a few peoneys in his honor. In my other grandfather's honor I have my Iris' . They are transplants all the way from IL to MI to TN! They were originally in my mother's childhood home, then to her first married home, then to michigan when we moved we took a few, took a few to TN and when I got married, I got to take some to my new home! I love seeing them every spring, and think of him when I do!

My Grandma B- we called her Grinka, not sure who started it, think it was cousin David lol and it sooo irritated her at first! lol- she was a survivor. My mom was the youngest of 3, and grandpa was "self employed" so when he passed, he hadn't paid into Social Security (it had just started too), so she was left with one choice: start working after being a Stay at home mom all those years! I can't imagine what it was like. Losing a husband suddenly, then BANG you are forced into the workforce at 56 years old! Yep! Those were TOUGH times. We think we have it "so bad" these days. We really need to look back and see what has gone on a generation ago, talk to our parents, our grandparents and see what they did to survive back then! You would be AMAZED!

I remember her as a "cosmopolitan" as I now call her woman. She smoked, wore the fashion of the day, drove a hunter green pinto, lived alone in a great apartment! she was COOL! And boy was it FUN to go to her apartment....except for having to be quiet walking/talking! LOL But we got to play dressup with her fancy gloves/scarves/beautiful jewelry grandpa brought home from hawaii when he was stationed there. We got to look through her drawers and see grandpas medals, and look at old pictures, and books. I miss her shelves with the shutter doors at the bottom, and the brown birds. I actually have found a clear owl like she had, and even though an "ear" was slightly broken, I bought it anyway. It is a memory of her, and when I look at it, I think of her and her strength through adversity. She builds me up when I see it.

My Grandma E... She was a character. Another amazing woman with strength abounding in her physically, mentally, spiritually. Dad was the youngest of 7 children, the one before him, a girl, had died before her first birthday. Growing up there wasn't a bathroom in the house, there was an "outhouse"! Yep! Dad tells the story of how the "style" of the day was to have dark blue blue jeans. They were so poor, and grandma sooo ingenius, that she would iron blue crayons into his jeans to make sure his jeans stayed the right color! Who would have thought about that these days?

When ever we went over to the house, there was always something to do, some art project she had lined up for us. It could be gluing alphabet soup letters (dry) on a doily and a felt heart for valentines day to spell out an "I LOVe YOU " message for our parents, we always played games, either UNO, Aggravation, or something else, and we always KNEW grandpa was cheating! It was sooooo much fun!

There was always so many things to look at there too! In their first house I can remember the room with the velvet wall paper! It was sooo much fun to go in there and trace the patterns with my fingers when I was little! we would ride the ottomon that had wheels on it from the kitchen to the dining room to the living room, to the entrance hall and back to the kitchen! WHEEEE she had this great lamp and when we would go to sleep, she would turn it on, and spin it, and we would watch the patterns the light would make on the ceiling until we fell asleep. I was blessed with that lamp some years ago. She had her collection of cups and saucers and her collection of plates to hang on the wall. Several years ago my parents blessed me with one of those plates. it was one they had given to her in 1979. I know because the date is on it! It says "a good mother makes a happy home" it is in blue and white and it has a little boy and girl standing facing eachother in the middle. it is just beautiful. It hangs smack dab in the middle of my kitchen above my stove. I look at it at least once a week, and strive to achieve that every day. I have plates from my honey's grandmother too, and those are in my dining room, and I am blessed to have known her as well, and am proud of seeing those and hope I make her proud and think of her when I see them!

I hope all of my grandmothers are looking down and are proud of me and the mother I am, because who they were helped to shape the mom I am today. Firm in my discipline, my love of cooking, my love of projects. To my grandfathers I credit my love of gardening. I think about them a lot while I am out there in the dirt and hope that they help me do the best I can.

Both grandmothers taught me many things. I sure do want to share their wisdom with you. Some things that I am thinking of today:

back then there wasn't a lot of "spray oils", so my Grandma E would just use a cup of oil and a brush to coat the pan before making pancakes, waffles, etc. I am doing it now because I am out of spray oil and it is working like a charm.

Grandma B had very poor eyesight, and dishwashers.....those were the kids in the house! LOL So, she taught us to use our hands to feel for dirty spots on dishes. you can feel the spots on pans, plates, etc with your fingers before you rinse to make sure it is clean

it is ok to have waffles and pancakes without syrup, in fact, that's my favorite way to eat them! just butter!

Grandma E always made tons of cakes, cookies, etc. for the kids lunches. Time to start doing that again. I can even make bread for them to eat sandwiches on.

It's ok to sell things if you need money. They are just things, they can be replaced at a later time.

Enjoy the little things in life. Playing games around the table, sitting outside on a nice day, spending time with family

MIA for 2 days!!!

Sorry I haven't posted in 2 days! It sure has been busy around here! I actually had my first substitute teacher job yesterday! for 6th grade! I was soooooo nervous, but by the end of the day I had the hang of it and it was a blast! I even got a complement in the last period! One of the boys told me he had asked a friend "how's the sub in her class" and was told I was "really nice"! yay!!!!Guess I will be happy and call it a triumph for the day! I learned a couple things: TAKE A BOOK!!!! TAKE WATER!!!!! LOL OMG was I bored the first half of the day- until I was able to go to my van and find a book! but by then I was sooo bored, the book made me sleepy and I had to get up and walk around! BUT it did give me time to work on my control journal pages and that is a good thing! LOL

So, today we pick up angel food! I canNOT wait! It is like manna from heaven on these days! esp when the freezer is bare, the fridges are light and the pantries are near empty (along with the bank acct!) There will still be some needs on the grocery list this week (TP, body wash, bread, milk, apples to start) but overall it should be another (hopefully!) cheap week! We are expecting TAXES to come in this coming friday! yay! then we will have a little wiggle room. to pay bills! LOL that's ok, that's what it's there for! the rest will go back to our emergency fund to build it up after us paying about $2000 on our van! UGH!!!! I hate transmissions!

After angel food pickup I will be posting again our menu for the week, and any recipes. I will also try to post a couple cheap/easy recipes our family loves. Today is "kids choice/kids cook" so it will be interesting what they come up with for dinner! I predict.....chicken nuggets and fries! LOL

I was talking to dd12 this morning and we were trying to decide on a "pet project" for her, something she could really get behind and feel good about supporting. I told her I would give her $20 and she could buy baking supplies and have a bake sale. with that money turn it around and buy more and have another, etc etc. do this throughout the year, and at the end of the year turn the money around for her charity. She thought this was a great idea, and she started out wanting to do it for St. Jude. Which is a WONDERFUL charity. we also talked about Vanderbilt Children's Hospital (in town) and homeless children, children from battered homes, etc. What she decided is at the end of the year, the money she has collected will go to buy gifts, we will divide them in 1/3 and 1/3 will go to Vanderbilt, 1/3 to homeless shelters, and 1/3 to battered shelters. She also wants to do for military families! she is just an amazing kid! She is quite a ...um... self centered? child at times so I wanted her to find something to look beyond and see a bigger picture. So I think this will be a great thing for her, and she is at a great age to start doing it. I also encouraged her to do this with her friends, start a blog about it, etc. I am really excited for her! I will keep you posted on how it's coming!

well, off to get ready for pickup! I can't wait!!!! rofl! it's like winning the lottery every month! hehehehe

Making Laundry Easier

Good Morning everyone! Today I am talking about Laundry! "Mt. Washmore" as "FlyLady" ( www.flylady.net) calls it. You know what I am talking about. That huge out of control pile on the laundry room floor, family room floor, bedroom floor, bathroom floor, or all of them! Most people don't like to do it, but it is a fact of life that is has to get done. If not by you, by someone else , because we sure can't go out and buy more, that just makes the pile bigger!!!!

With 3 girls, how do I keep it all in check? Well, I must admit it has been out of control for quite a while, but I have had things in place for a while and what has REALLY REALLY helped me is decluttering probably 1/2 of all of our clothes! Since doing that for the last 2 months, I have really been able to keep up with the daily chore of washing clothes! BUT had it not been for other things in my "tool box" so to speak, I would not have been able to organize and get it all together.

One thing I started years and years ago was I noticed from all the consignment sales I had a ton of kiddie plastic hangers in all sorts of colors. I sorted them, then decided who they most resembled. Red/pink - oldest (she likes pink), yellow- middle (liked yellow at the time), and green- youngest. Then I started hanging all of their clothes! Everything except undergarments and pajamas. At that young age they learned who's hangers were who's and so they could go into a shared closet and know "that's a yellow hanger, that's mine". and to put them away helped too. I have white big ones and honey has big grey and black ones. It's easier for him to get it straightened out in our closet when he sees the hangers mixed up! lol Now that the kids are growing, oldest is in "big" hangers, so she is onto big blue hangers (they were hanging around! lol), middle is transitioning into big yellow hangers, but she still has yellow and small white hangers, and youngest has red and green now. Honey gets frustrated every now and again because there are "NO MORE WIRE HANGERS!" ROFL!!!!

the other thing I started about a year ago is I went to Walmart and they had these plastic bins (sterilite?) that you could stack that are very sturdy. I bought 5 of them. here is their use: lights, darks, whites, towels, sheets/blankets/tablecloths. I used a sharpie to lable them all so the family can sort their own clothes, they are big enough to hold a load, maybe load and a half, so when they are empty I know to go hunting, and when they are full, time to get the machines moving! LOL If I can find the picture I took a while ago of them I will post it.

I do want to discuss how I was able to declutter so many clothes. It started out I would have a big plastic garbage bag outside the laundry room door, and when I would fold my clothes (from the dryer onto hangers or into baskets), I would decide if it was too big, too small, ugly, tired of looking at it, torn, etc. then I would either throw it away, or give it away. At this point I was doing more of that than keeping. I was about 1/2- 3/4 giving away my loads at this point. I kept the good brands of the kids clothes, only non stained, etc. same with us. We deserve good stuff. if it meant we needed to get a few new things, then that's what it meant, we deserve to feel good, not tired in our clothes.

Now that I am pretty much decluttered I have 2 hooks on the wall of my laundry room with grocery bags on each. One for garbage, one for give away. As I am folding my clothes/hanging them, if I decide it needs to go, I put it in the appropriate bag. when the bag is full, it goes out! it is that easy.

I also made up a "laundry schedule" to help everyone understand what needs to be done when. below is my schedule you can adapt for your house:

Laundry Schedule

Tues Feb 17, 2009 Coupons, coupons Coupons!!!!

Ok, ok, I am a reformed coupon hater! I thought coupons were no good, only for the "name brand" stuff and that was always too expensive anyway so that's why they were making coupons for them, to make them the price I would pay for them! Well! Let me tell you! I was told about a site while talking in a chat room called http://www.grocerygame.com/ and the founder is a genius! I saw my mom clip coupons when I was a kid, and saw her save $20 or so every week, but what I save is way way more than that! and I would have never known it had I not found that website!

Now, from the get-go I want you to know, this is NOT an advertisment for this site! I just want you to know about a TOOL I used to learn how to do something. Will I make anything if you join? Nope! Is it a TOOL for YOU to learn how to use coupons correctly? YEP. there are a couple ways you can do it. I think there is still a downloadable book that you can get to show you how to do it if there are no "list stores" in your area, or you can join for $1 for the first month, then a nominal fee there after until you decide to cancel.

What I learned: We are a family of 5, so I need to stock up....buy 4 newspapers on monday when they are $1 instead of $1.50 so I can get 4 of every coupon. That will usually do us to stock up for a while.

Sometimes I can get things for free, or nearly free even though they are name brand! Sometimes name brand IS better! It lasts longer, tastes better, or is generally a better value!

Know which stores double coupons in your area- those are the stores to hit most often! they will be the biggest bang for your buck! I have saved 50%+ at these stores! Imagine going in and having $300 worth of stuff and paying $150 for it! amazing! and that is just ONE store, ONE week! Now, I am not saying to spend that much money if you don't have it! trust me, I understand, but spend your "extra" money wisely by using coupons, matching them up to good ads, and saving them until you find a really sweet deal!

Get out of your comfort zone, try new brands and flavors, and you just might be surprised! Oh my kids just love it when I "grocery game" because that's when they get the "fun stuff" for their lunches, like fruit by the foot, etc. lol

Take a second look at coupons, you just might be pleasantly surprised!

Monday Feb 16, 2009 Presidents day (USA)/Family day(Canada)

Happy Presidents day/Family day Everyone! Hope you are enjoying this day! For us americans, this means we have a "day off" from most things...school, mail, banks....but not creditors calling, some jobs, and figuring out more ways to save money! LOL

So, I went to Aldi with list in hand and spent $41.71. I must admit I added 3 things to my list that weren't on there : 1 lb of butter and 2 boxes of hamburger helper. the butter was 1.99 (compared to 2.99 at foodlion, etc) and the hamburger helper was .96 each. I got those items because :1. I was getting a bit low on butter and forgot to put it on my list, and 2. I forgot to put the ribs in the crockpot, so I needed a quick dinner for cheap and knew I had hamburger coming out my ears at home. I was pretty happy overall with my spending. Add to that the $25ish I spent the night before and we are up to about $66 for the week for the 5 of us. Let's see how it goes! lol

So, today I really want to talk about making things easier on you. Sometimes the cheapest isn't always the best, and sometimes doing more ahead of time is better for saving money.

A week ago or so I was running low on laundry detergent and fabric softner. I have learned to love liquid softner for my washer, so I was really trying to find a new good smelling alternative. Food Lion has a new brand out and so I thought since it was cheap I would try it.

I have started watering down the snuggle 1/2 and 1/2 when i get a new bottle because, what do we do anyway? Put a capful in, then add more water. so, to save myself time (and ultimately money) I started watering it down when I found that tip on another site. I found that the water really didn't reduce the effect I was looking for, and it stretched the softner farther because I would still do a capful, then add water! When my snuggle ran out, I added 1/2 the bottle of the "new stuff' to my old snuggle bottle (it was a bit thin looking from the beginning), and filled up 1/2 way with water, etc. well, I was highly disappointed the first load when I did what I normally did with snuggle and my laundry came out smelling not like I expected. Usually I do a load before I go to bed, then start it in the dryer in the am. In the am it should still smell nice, this time it didn't smell all that wonderful. I am now up to filling up the softner holder with 3 capfuls and am somewhat happy with the outcome. I learned sometimes cheaper isn't better. I will be getting snuggle or suavatel after this runs out! As far as the soap goes, it is gloppy, but it does the job, so..... if I can get my fav cheaper I will.

As far as making things ahead, I have told you I use coupons, and I guess tomorrow will be the day to talk about them, but what I do is "stockpile" food. Like I have 4 large boxes "add water pancake mix". I had an extra kid here this am (dd12's friend spent the night) so I made 1/2 the box and what is leftover I will freeze for fast breakfasts in the am. My kids are notorious for not wanting to eat in the am "it takes too long" etc, so if I can pull out premade pancakes and heat them up in 30 seconds, it makes mom feel good! lol

Sunday is my "big cooking day" I LOVE to cook (you have to, to save money!) so I will spend tons of time in the kitchen cooking. On sunday I will make several meals for the week, or a big pot of soup for the family to use as lunches (one dd in particular loves hot meals instead of sandwiches for lunches), when I came in from aldi yesterday I had 3 bags of "chips"- cheetos (not fluffy), fritos and pretzel sticks. I bagged them all up in portions for lunches. This guarantees they won't be taking too many then throwing them away, and it also helps to make sure they aren't over eating as well! Some weeks I have even been known to have the kids make up their sandwiches for the week and put them in the fridge so it is easier in the am (hmmmm sounds like a plan for the week! LOL).

When making dinner, make enough for 2 nights, then you can freeze one meal for another time when you are too tired and want to go "out" to eat. It will be cheaper, healthier, and actually easier because you don't have to drive anywhere. Make sure you have a sharpie on hand to write on the plastic freezer bags what is in there, and when it was made (some things all look alike when frozen!) Don't forget to ask yourself when cooking "if I don't use as much of this meat as it calls for (or as I usually use) what else can I use it for"? Leftover taco meat one night becomes taco cups the next night, leftover spaghetti sauce and noodles one night become 3 lunches for you and honey to take for work! I always make too many noodles and too much sauce on spaghetti night for just that reason. Then and when we have beef stroganoff, etc. If there is enough leftover for 5 meals, heck! make 5 lunches! pretty soon you will have a good variety in the freezer and you won't have to go out anymore!

Have fun cooking! Remember it can be fun! Get the whole family involved if you want to! Unfortunatly I have no patience due to my condition (perfectionism) LOL so I just do it myself, but then again, I LOVE doing it! find new recipes! remember the old ones! ask your family what they want to eat, or what their favorite is! You just might be surprised! don't forget to eat around that table to reconnect with eachother!

Sunday Feb 16, 2009 Part I of How I menu plan and why

Ok, you say "menu planning" and everyone lets out a collective groan....come on...let's hear it! BUT if you are going to save money it is a MUST. I mean MUST. And not just something as simple as dinner. I mean ALL meals! That way when you go to the grocery store you have a COMPLETE list of what you need, not just a list of dinners and "I'll fill in the rest". That's where the groceries get expensive.

From the get-go you have to say you will stick to that list. NO MATTER WHAT! If you think you will want something.....like icecream or a magazine.... go ahead and put it on the list, if you don't get it, more the better, but if you DO get it, at least you can say it was on the list! LOL

It may sound like a pain, but after a while you will figure out which stores have the cheaper items, so you will arrange your lists according to where to go. I know Aldi has cheap cereal we like, along with milk, eggs, bread, some veggies and fruits. I know Kroger will have discount breads (whole grain, flavors, etc) we like at good prices, and I like their meats, so I will shop their discount meats. I also like their cat food/litter prices, and I go there with my coupons because they double which also helps us with our gas because for every $100, we get a 10 cent discount per gallon. Etc, etc. you see how it goes. It is really about preference and where you can get the most bang for your buck, and how far you have to drive. Do I do all these stores in one day? Not always. I used to.

Saturday and Sunday is when I menu plan. The weekends are slower for me, and it gives me a bit more time to think. No homework usually for the kids, so I have more "me" time to think. Depending on what is going on (like yesterday was Valentines day) I will usually be able to get it done in one day, but sometimes I have to come back and do it the next and grocery shop that same day.

So, here's what I do: I go through the freezer and pantries (yes, I have 2! lol) and see/write down all that I have main food-wise. Meaning all the meat (even if the freezer is full), and anything else like pancake batter, hamburger helper, etc. I also check the fridge for cheese and eggs.

Then I look at my "Menu planning basic schedule for dinners" and make up my dinner meals out of what I have, and what comes on what days. Keeps things fresh- I usually find a new recipe or two to try, use some old favs and just have fun. I print out any recipes I need and put them in my control journal behind my Menu planning tab so I have them on hand for the week.

Then I look at the breakfast list. This is something I made up years ago and it really helps. It is just 14 breakfasts that are simple, cheap and that MY family likes. Your family may be different. It has evolved since we started public school to include faster things like cold cereal and blueberry muffins, but it also has things on it like pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, etc. Don't forget the fruit. Make it simple! I did 14 meals because we get paid every 2 weeks so I would go shopping for 14 days! I wanted to make sure my babies had food!

Lunches are done the same way- a list of 14. Now that we are in public school it has kind of evolved too, though! DD12 likes chicken breast deli sliced sandwiches, dd10 likes a warm lunch, so she usually takes leftovers, and dd8 likes a good thick peanutbutter sandwich! So, my lunch list is now trying to make healthier choices than just chips....I go with microwave popcorn, cheddar and carmel rice cakes from Aldi, they all love carrots and fresh fruit. They all take water, we reuse propel bottles!

Now that we are in public school (gosh how many times do I have to say that??!!! lol) I also have to add "snacks for school" to my grocery list because the 2 youngest have to have snacks everyday to take. They have late lunches, so the teachers let them have snacks mid-morning. So, that has to be added to my grocery list/menu list as well. It's not rocket science, a cheese stick and pretzels will do it for the most part, but they do want a variety too, so.....

But this is how I menu plan, Part II will be a copy of my basic dinner schedule, and part III will be my menu plan for this week.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hey everyone! Let's get hyped up about spending some of that $14billion I heard yesterday will be spent on this "holiday"!!!! woooohoooo! Let's just go into debt over a dozen long stem roses that will die! YES!!!!! Let's take our Honey out to eat so we can spend too much and wait too long for food that we could have made better at home, and a lot cheaper! Come on people! we are TOOOOO smart for that! We are tooooooo inventive for that! Let's get out our thinking caps and make this holiday a GREAT one for little money!!!!!

Ok, so maybe there is an ulterior motive being that we are tight tight with money this year, but hey, we are survivors and we will make this one a year to remember and it will be worth it! This is what we are going to do:

1. I have already gotten the Cornish Game Hens ($5 each at aldi) out of the freezer for dinner tonight (5 of them, one for each of us, I bought a long time ago to celebrate when we got the final word we were moving, but it never came- this is a good time to celebrate in my estimation!).

2. we will also have: Broccoli (frozen, 1 bag .79 at aldi) with butter and parmesan cheese (add another .50), baked potatoes ($1/5 lbs, so way less than that) with butter salt and pepper (maybe shredded cheddar and sour cream if I go shopping today- but that's another post)

3. We will serve on the good dishes, with the good silverware Honey got for his years of service at work, on a new table cloth I got at linens and things going out of business (think I paid $5 for a linen table cloth!)and of course cloth napkins - we don't use paper napkins here, too expensive, not the best for the environment.

4. The big deal will be getting the dining room clean- we have been so busy the last 2 months getting the house ready for sale/move- that didn't go through- that we have stuff in there that needs to be decluttered, it will be dealt with today.

5. I have some cheap cake mix (.50/box?) so I will make a 9X13 and dust it with powdered sugar (how we love to eat it!) for dessert.

6. I may have Honey and kiddos go to the movie place and rent us a couple $1 movies and put it on the big screen in the family room.

7. I will have all of us sit around the table today and make cards for eachother to be passed out after dinner- even Honey will have to do this! LOL Makes us all appreciate eachother a little more.

We will also make time to take a walk today, play outside with the kids, and generally have fun. Fun for me is cooking, so I may just do that, but I right now have as many windows open in the house as I can and it is fabulous! all beds are made, we have had some breakfast and we are getting ready for a great day! How about you? How can you make this cheap and fun?

Just a quick note

I saw something under my "Einstein quote of the day" (an ad) and I am tempted to pull it just because of that, but I like the quotes! So I am just putting a quick blurb here......It said something about ebay.

I have used ebay in the past, we have made money using ebay in the past, over the last couple years it has gotten a "different vibe" and rules/regulations have changed and I now tell people that if you want to get a bargin that isn't always the place to go. If you are looking for chain store stuff but can't find it, look on ebay, but we won't ever sell on there again. Just our 2 cents. Too much hassle, too many changes to the original intent, and not worth it to US anymore. If you are looking for an "at home job" ebay is NOT the place to start.

I was going to save this for another day post, but since I am here, I have tried Craigslist for other things (selling, buying, looking for services, posting services) some have had great success on it, maybe it is just my area, or what I am looking for, but I can't say my success has be great.

I like Freecycle, but it can be iffy too. Just make sure you aren't there when the person comes to pick up the stuff, because you may not like who is receiving it, or you may be expected to help load it and you may not want to. if you are looking for something, it is nice to look on there, but all those "wanted" posts wear me thin all the dang time! especially when they are from one or two people mostly.

Thats why I choose to give to thrift stores (either local or large ones) . some stores around here- what they sell, the profit helps pay for lights/water, etc for locals who can't afford, or they help to buy supplies for the food bank in back of the store, other places I give to are large (goodwill, salvation army, etc). It just depends on the mood I am in. Don't forget pregnancy crisis centers, womens shelters, etc.

God blessed you with these items for a reason, and yea, it would be nice to get money out of them especially in these hard times, but in the bible it says that God loves a cheerful giver, and he will give back to you 10-fold. Have faith. There is someone out there that needs it more than you do, and if you can't sell it cheaply (as in low overhead, or work on your part), then you might as well just give it away. At least that's the way I look at it.

Friday Feb 13, 2009 Near and Dear to my HEART: Angel Food Ministries

I wanted to tell you all today about a great ministry out there, in some states it might be called different things (there are different "ministries" that do this, one I can thing of is SHARE) but here it is called Angel Food Ministries (http://www.angelfoodministries.com/) it is countrywide, but it depends on individual churches setting up distribution centers -and keeping them going- to grow the ministry.

We found AFM a few years ago, and I can't tell you what it has done for our family! The first month, we got 1 box, just to try and see what we thought of the food. I tell ya, we were hooked! Overall the food is great! restaurant quality meats for the most part, the veggies are almost always frozen, now they have "shelf stable milk" we always get eggs now, the desserts can be a bit on the odd side, but hey, the kids will usually eat them or we give them away to neighbors! LOL

Here is how our family utilizes this wonderful resource: we are a family of 5. The "main box" feeds a "typical family of 4 for a week" for $30. With that in mind I spend $150 and get 5 boxes (one for each of us) because they send their meats (fresh meats) in servings of 4, so I have to have at least 2 servings to make enough for one dinner for us. Now, there are other things you can add to your order (Senior convenience meals, additional "special boxes" at different prices), but this is just how it works best for MY family. I find that this $150 is enough meat for the entire month. I will add weekly maybe an additional $10 worth of "markdown meat" to the freezer the first few months just so we have some variety, but after that, your freezer will be full with tons of stuff.

The rest of the food in the box, to us, is just "icing on the cake". Meaning- We now have 5 dozen eggs, 5 boxes of shelf stable milk for thickening sauces and gravies or making chocolate milk, a breakfast item (add water pancake mix, muffin mix or cereal type thing), rice or beans, frozen veggies, etc. My pantry gets full fast. That frees up the rest of my "grocery money" for the month for the stuff you always struggle to get- laundry soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc. You know what I am talking about. That's where I take my coupons and go to http://www.grocerygame.com/ and spend my "extra" money to stock up and save that way. I will talk more about Grocery Game tomorrow.

I wanted to talk about AFM today because, at least at MY site at MY location, we have until Sunday to turn in our orders (yes, they do take food stamps too!), and different areas of the country have different order turn in dates, so please please look it up and get moving on it! I would LOVE to know how many of you start ordering it, and if you like it or not!

Simple Recipe for Thursday Feb 12, 2009

Crustless quiche (very flexible)

I use this recipe to make breakfasts for the week, lunches on the go, or a quick dinner with leftovers. It is a "kitchen sink" kind of recipe, so add the flavors you love.
8 eggs
1/2 cup milk (skim, whole, soy, whatever you have)
1 cup cheese (shredded, whatever flavor you like, or 1/2 cup parmesan )
1/2 lb meat (bacon, canadian bacon, sausage, sausage links, or omit)
1/2 cup veggie( onion, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes are most popular)

Whisk eggs and milk together, add in milk, cheese, meat, and veggies. Put into a 9x13 pan and bake at 350 degrees until golden brown on top (25-30 min). cut into desired size squares. freeze in freezer baggies to make take and heat snacks or lunches or breakfasts.

Price: MUCH cheaper than Mcdonalds and MUCH better on your heart too!

Feb 12, 2009 Day one of This!

Ok, so I decided that I have so many wonderful tips and tricks about saving money and cooking and other things that I would love to share with many other people that I would just start blogging about them! I decided to post wonderful links to other money saving sites (some you do have to pay for, but they are just wonderful) and others you don't. I will tell you daily something how I saved that day, or about a favorite trick/tip. We have lived on a single income since my oldest child was 11 months old. She will be 13 next month! I am JUST NOW going "back to work"

Yes, I tried "working" off and on during that time, but with 3 kids 2 years apart, daycare would have been to expensive, and we decided to homeschool. Up until last year we did. In Sept 2007 we started them in Public School. It hasn't always been easy, but somethings have been great. I wouldn't change the homeschool experience for anything, as well as the public school experience. I think they both have their pluses and minuses! More on that another time. LOL

For today I will tell you that my "chosen" profession for the moment will be as a substitute for the public school system in our county. I have signed up for the 2 schools my 3 girls go to because they have been BEGGING me to do this, and I will. It brings in extra pay, and I think getting out of the house will be a good thing for me! Sometimes MOM just needs that!

Mom, take advantage of any opportunity handed to you to do something with PEOPLE! I got an automated call from "My church" last night (we haven't been to service in over a year! :( I know, bad) but it was about a "ladies night" pj party, $5 per person and they just ask that you bring something to help out one of their ministries (very cheap). So, I am going to call 2 of my friends today and ask them to come with me because I am a big chicken and then we will all go. Even though we are tight tight tight with money this month, I can handle $5. As far as what they are asking for their ministry, I will look through my coupons and they will get what I can get dirt cheap. (more on that another time!)

But as for now, I need to get myself ready for my day, get my list organized and ready to clean. I think (and pray!) my week will be busy next week with subbing so I want to be able to start with a clean house/full menu/all clothes clean- you know what I mean.
